WATER QUALITY CONTROL....( KAWALAN MUTU AIR MINUM -KMAM) part 1

On the 6 December 2011,we went to Unit Bakas for a briefing about KMAM before we going to the water treatment plant. The health officer- madam Hazimah binti Hassan (who is a very friendly person) helped us by sharing information about her duty and responsibility as a member in the unit KMAM. She also explained about how water is collected, the water
treatment process and many more. Because of her , we able to understand better about this unit.

ABOUT KMAM

KMAM is a body under the supervision of Engineering Unit of disease control unit.
There are 5 elements to ensure the quality of drinking water:
- monitoring
- cleanliness survey
- evaluation of data
- treatment action
- institutional inspection

DUTY AND RESPONSIBILITY OF ASSISTANCE HEALTH OFFICER.
- plan and carry out the activities collecting water sample and send it to the chemistry laboratory .
-provides information on the operations and water sampling stations.
- record the list of water treatment plant and water sources stations
- record the results of the sampling and analysis
-take actin against violations of drinking water quality.

ABOUT SIK
The district is divided into 4 main courses based on its water supply.
- BATU LIMA
- SIK
- JENIANG
- BERIS JAYA
It covers 44 points sampling stations throughout the district.
In one week , minimum of 13 samples is collected from each stations. the sample will be sent to chemistry laboratory in
Alor Star within 24 hour. The result will be expected after 2 weeks.

WATER QUALITY MONITORING
  1. INSITU testing - it is check on the spot . Check for Chlorine level, pH, turbidity and temperature.
  2. check for bacteria - example check for coliform level and presence of E.coli. Standard criteria is 0. If the result more than 0, it's mean that there is presence of bacteria.
  3. check for presence of chemical material- for example short chain : nitrogen and long chain: ammonia
  4. pesticide

above is parameter for raw water.
Raw water mean that the water source is not
treated yet. It come straight from the river.

above is the parameter for treated water. It come from the water treatment plant.

The INSITU testing is done weekly at the sampling point stations.
Check for the bacterial is done weekly.
For checking the short chemical chain is done once a month whereas the long chemical chain is done 4 time a year.
Checking for presence of pesticide is done 4 times in a year.
After the sample is collected, it will be sent to chemical laboratory. Once the results and the data is collected, the KMAM unit will insert the information into software programme called water quality surveillance. This will be studied by the state level KMAM at all time.
